Nowadays so many people suffer with stomach issues and conditions like chron's disease , irritable bowel syndrome , bad digestion , upset stomach or regular bloating .

I for one have suffered with bloating and upset stomach at different stages of my journey due to various reasons , being a Virgo my sign is ruled by the stomach which also makes me more prone to stomach issues .

Let me help you by giving you some tips i have learnt along the way to help prevent or treat stomach problems .

9 tips for a happy gut

Tip #1 - Shit more often

Did you know you should be shitting as much as you are eating .every time you eat you should shit. Yup you read that right lets get straight to the point bad digestion and upset stomach can come from you not using the toilet enough . So if you are one of these people that think its ok to only shit 1-2 times a week , i'm here to tell you that is not healthy . All the waste that comes out of you contains toxins so the longer it is in the body the more the toxins will cause issues . Read the next tips to find ways to make sure you go to toilet more often .

Tip #2 - Stay hydrated

Drink water mind your damn business , staying hydrated is a great way to have good digestion, every morning i make sure to drink water first thing at least an hour before any food this aids the digestion process. and helps the production of acid which is necessary to break down food. Water also helps you absorb the nutrients from your food and flushes the body of toxins . It softens your stool to help you go to the toilet to eliminate waste .

"Emotional eating is when you eat not because of physical hunger but in response to an emotion" – Dr Susan Albers -Clinical psychologist

Tip #3 - Stop overeating

Overeating is caused by emotions , its a well known fact that we eat when we feel sad , i.e when its that time of the month ladies we can easily fall into the trap of overeating unhealthy things which actually makes us feel worst than we already feel . In films we always see a woman who has had her heartbroken sitting in her bed crying while eating a tub of ice cream and chocolate , she is actually feeding her emotions instead of processing them. I know i am guilty of this and have caught myself in these emotional loops of overeating . There are a few ways have found that work for me to help process emotions instead of overeating , we will go into that in future blog .

Tip #4 - Eat your greens

Eating your greens is a sure way to help you have a happy gut . Greens are high in fibre which aids digestion and prevents constipation . Greens are nutrient dense and contain multiple vitamins and minerals that help support gut health like vitamin A, C & K. Greens are anti-inflammatory and contain antioxidants that helps with inflammation and high acidity levels, because greens are alkaline they neutralise stomach acid and balance ph levels.

Tip #5 - Limit your sugar intake

Eating too much sugar can damage the stomach lining causing long term issues like leaky gut syndrome. Sugar can also cause inflammation in the gut . High sugar intake can effect the gut bacteria otherwise known as the Microbiome which can cause inflammation that then promotes the overgrowth of yeast that can then show up in the body with rashes , constipation ,thrush, bloating , white patches on tongue , food cravings for sugar and carbs and so on .

Tip#6- Fasting

Fasting helps to reset the digestive system and give it a well deserved rest from constantly digesting food, this can help reduce inflammation alleviating symptoms or digestive issues . Fasting enables us to flush unwanted toxins out the body . Fasting reduces bloating and discomfort .

Tip#7 Detoxing the body

Detoxing the body helps you to get rid of parasites that can be causing you to have cravings for unhealthy food . Detoxing also helps you to identify the foods that are causing you issues . Detoxing helps liver function as this organ detoxifies the body and helps process nutrients and much more.

"The gut is really a sensory organ that is in constant communication with the brain . It's influencing what we perceive , what we do and how we feel " - Dr Emeran Mayer- \Gastroenterologist & Neuroscientist

It has been known since for many many years even by the ancient egyptians that "the gut is the seat of emotion" , knowing this shows us that emotion has a big part to play in our gut health as well as the things we eat and the state of our stress levels . Taking control of how we feel will enable us to make better decisions in how we eat instead of being controlled to eat our feelings . The gut and the brain have a very interesting relationship, they communicate back and forth through the highway of the vagus nerve , which also shows us that what we eat effects what we think which effects what we do and vice versa . I won't go into to much about this here but check out my next blog focusing on gut and brain connection and its effect on our holistic health .
